Both Hulk and Wu Lei scored twice in the second half as Shanghai SIPG crushed Shanghai Shenhua 6-1 on Saturday evening and closed the gap on Chinese Super League leaders Guangzhou Evergrande to five points.
The 25th round hotly anticipated Shanghai derby was goalless at half time, but after the break SIPG took command, thrashing Shanghai Shenhua with three goals in four minutes just before the hour mark from Brazilian striker Hulk, Wu Lei and Odil Ahmedov.
Carlos Tevez saw his name on the scoresheet for Shenhua, coming off the bench to break his three month goal drought with a smart close-range finish in the 60th minute. Earlier in the week the Argentine had been accused of being overweight by new boss Wu Jingui.
Just 3 minutes later Wu Lei scored again, followed by Hulk in the 75th minute and Li Shenglong in the 82nd. SIPG boss Andre Villas-Boas spoke of his satisfaction of the win after the match.
“The first half was really tight, our opponent didn’t give us much room,” he said.
“The first goal in the second half was crucial. After that Shenhua gave too much space to us and that was the main reason for the big scoreline.
“This match has shown our quality and this big win means alot to us. I am quite satisfied with everyone. Now Shenhua is in difficult moment, and it is not easy for any coach taking over. I hope Shenhua can find its way soon.
“We still have the theoretical chance of winning the Chinese Super League title, even if we can’t nail down the trophy, we have to make sure to get second place. We might use players in rotation in the game against Beijing in order to have core players get ready for the Asian Champions League match against Urawa.”
