Seongnam FC is a professional football club based in the city of Seongnam who plays their football in the K1 League. Seongnam FC then went through a horror period which culminated in them being relegated for the first time in their history in 2016. Nam Ki-il was appointed as manager in 2017 and tasked with returning Seongnam FC to top flight football. He accomplished his mission as they regained promotion at their first attempt. He was then officially appointed as the permanent manger in the 2019 season. Seongnam FC play their home matches at the Tancheon Sports Complex which has both a football and baseball stadium offering a capacity of 16,146. They will be hoping for a return to their former glory as they won the last of their seven league titles back in 2006. The team has a full black kit for their home matches and a full white kit for their away matches.
The team has moved around since their formation and have had multiple name changes. They were formed in 1988 and were known as Ilhwa Chunma Football Club, joining the K1 League in 1989. They were very quickly out of the blocks and topped the K-League table in 1992, which was followed by three successive league titles from 1993 to 1995. In the same year they won the 1995 Asian Club Championship. In 1996 the team was forced out of Seoul and many of their top players also left due to their relocation to the city of Cheonan. This mass exodus of players led to a performance slump that was so severe that they finished bottom of the league in 1998 and 1999. In 2000, the team moved to Seongnam and renamed themselves to Seongnam Ilhwa Chunma. This change brought immediate fruits as the team won three consecutive league titles from 2001 to 2003. In 2013, Seongnam City officially took over the club from Ilhwa Co., Ltd. and the club was renamed once again, this time to Seongnam FC.
