Pune City registered a 2-0 win over Mumbai City, in the latest edition of the ‘Maha Derby’ of the Indian Super League (ISL) at the Mumbai Football Arena on Sunday.
The visitors took the lead in the 18th minute after Sarthak Golui crossed for Diego Carlos inside the box and the delivery took a deflection off Maharashtra-born Raju Gaikwad, before rolling past goalkeeper Amrinder.
During the second half the hosts wasted two good efforts to equalise by Balwant and Thiago Santos.
The lead was eventually doubled by the visitors in the 83rd minute as Marcelinho registered his name on the score-sheet. Substitute Lucca, who was left unmarked, rushed into the middle before he played the ball for Marcelinho who was positioned on the right. The 30-year-old attacker easily sent the shot past Mumbai in what was the final nail on the coffin.
Pune now have 28 points from 14 matches and look set to book a place in the top four. For Mumbai, this was their fourth consecutive loss at home and their hopes of the playoffs have been crushed.
Meanwhile bottom-placed Delhi Dynamos let slip a one-goal advantage, to share the spoils with visiting Chennaiyin FC in their Indian Super League (ISL) match at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium also on Sunday.
When the two sides met previously at the Marina Arena the match also ended in a stalemate with the sides forced to share the spoils of a 2-2 draw.
Kalu Uche scored his sixth goal this season to give Delhi the lead from the penalty spot in the 59th minute, after Raphael Augusto was adjudged to have brought down Matias Mirabhe inside the box.
Chennaiyin ultimately got their equalizer in the 81st minute when Mailson Alves rose above Xabier to nod in Milehic’s dangerous free-kick into the back of the net.
Despite both sides going for it during the dying moments of the game, neither could find the winner.
