Mumbai Edge Past FC Goa 4-3

Mumbai City FC edged past FC Goa 4-3 on Sunday in an exciting game at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Fatorda.

Ferran ‘Coro’ Corominas increased his lead at the top of the goal standings, scoring a brace to take his tally to 12 for the season, whilst Manuel Lanzarote scored his 8th.

The homeside started off the match on the front foot with Corominas putting Goa ahead in the 34th minute, after Mandar Rao Desai left-footer saw the ball deflected on rival keeper Amrinder Singh’s chest and fall on his path as Corominas slotted the ball into the net.

However, Goa’s defence crumbled under pressure allowing Mumbai to equalise 2 minutes later through Everton Santos. By the stroke of halftime Goa were back in the lead through Lanzarote. They were down to 10-men soon after with Seriton Fernandes receiving his second yellow card for pulling down Santos.

In the 53rd minute the Islanders hit back after Ali brought down Sanju Pradhan just inside the area and the referee immediately pointed to the spot. Emana Edzimbi stepped up and sent Kattimani the wrong way to restore parity to the game once again.

Mumbai went up 3-2 in the 70th minute through Thiago Santos but once again the homeside equalised after Corominas scored his second in the 78th minute.

Goa’s defence again succumbed to the pressure in the 86th as Balwant Singh scored the winner from close range.

Mumbai coach Alexandre Guimaraes spoke to the press after the match about his side’s composure and attitude against one of the best teams of ISL.

”We knew that in this scenario we needed to manage different match situations in the 90 minutes and we handled it really well. In the end, it didn’t matter if they played better in the first half. I told the players that we are still in the game and as Goa will press for more goals we will have more chances to exploit the spaces left open in their defence.”

He continued, “That was the game plan and I’m happy that the players stuck to it. This is a very important victory for us as it’s not an easy task to come here and win.”

During Sunday’s other match, Jamshedpur defeated Atletico de Kolkata 0-1
