Mohun Bagan And Aizawl Remain Tied At Top With 33 Points

Week 16 of the Hero I-league kicked off on Saturday 15th April with a match between Shillong Lajong and Bengaluru FC, with the home side losing 2-0 at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Shillong.

The visitors scored their first goal in the 26th minute after Captain Sunil Chhetri found space in the box, taking advantage of a sleeping Shillong defence, to coolly slot home past the dive of a hapless Vishal Kaith.

Harmanjot Khabra doubled the lead in the 49th minute with his first goal for Bengaluru after heading home a looping cross.

The hosts came close in the final minute of the game, but Bengaluru went on to make it three clean sheets in as many games across competitions.

Aizawl temporarily went back to the top of the table on Saturday after their impressive 3-1 win over Churchill Brothers at Tilak Maidan in Vasco.

Kamo Bayi scored a brace in the 7th and 46th minute, whilst Anthony D’Souza pulled one back for the former national champions in the 69th minute.

Laldanmawia Ralte sealed all three points with a screamer from the top of the box which Naveen stood no chance against at the right top corner.

Saturday’s other game was between Minerva Punjab and Mohun Bagan at the Guru Nanak Stadium in Ludhiana which ended in a 1-0 win for the visitors.

It was an unconvincing but crucial win for Mohun Bagan, ensuring their place back at the top of the table tied on 33 points from 16 matches with Aizawl, ahead on the head-to-head record.

Sony Norde snatched the solitary goal of the game in the 84th minute as he ran past the advance defensive line and slotted the ball expertly past an onrushing Arshdeep

Jeje Lalpekhlua had an opportunity to add another goal in the added time but his shot from outside the box was punched out by Arshdeep who had a brilliant game.
