FC Seoul has always enjoyed having more financial power than most other teams as they are sponsored by the electronic giants LG. They play their home games at the iconic Seoul World Cup Stadium, in exchange for sharing the cost of constructing the building. The LG Group paid $15m and the stadium was officially confirmed as the new home of FC Seoul. The managerial prowess that FC Seoul enjoyed during their dominant years has sadly been missing since their last title in 2016. The man tasked to bring back the team’s glory days is head coach An Ik-soo. They have had two disappointing seasons in 2020 and 2021 finishing in ninth and seventh place respectively. Ki Sung-yueng has again been trusted with the captaincy for 2022, after leading the team for the first time last season.
FC Seoul is one of the most decorated teams in South Korean football and was formed in 1983 by the Lucky-Goldstar group. They played their first season of professional football in 1984 and finished seventh in the league. They have had their name changed many times during their history, but the last time their name was changed was in 2004 from Anyang LG Cheetahs to their current name of FC Seoul. They won their first league title in 1985 and have gone on to win five more titles since then. However, they are without a league title since 2016. The former K-League champions have one of the biggest fan bases in the league as they are situated in the capital city. This was made evident in 2010 when there was a crowd attendance of 60,747 for their match against Seongnam Ilhwa. This was the biggest recorded crowd for any sporting event in the country. One of their crowning sporting moments was in 2010 when they completed the double by winning the league title and the League Cup title.
