The last three matches of Round 6 of the Hero I-League were played out on Wednesday. The results of the games put Kingfisher East Bengal at the top of the points table with 16 points. Mohun Bagan and Aizawl sit in 2nd and 3rd spot with 13 points and the three newcomers, Churchill Brothers, Chennai City and Minerva Punjab at the bottom in 8th, 9th and 10th spot respectively.
In the first game, we saw Aizawl return to winning ways with a 1-0 win over DSK Shivajians at the Rajiv Gandhi Stadium in Aizawl, after Brandon Vanlalremdika snatched the sole goal of the match in the dying moments.
The game got off to a good start, but the many shots taken didn’t make it to the back of the net. Goal mouth action dried up in the second half. Brandon eventually come off the bench, on the hour mark, before converting a half-chance to register Aizawl’s fourth win of the season under Khalid Jamil, to give them their third consecutive win at home.
League leaders East Bengal maintained their unbeaten start to the season with a 2-0 victory over Mumbai at the Barasat Stadium in Kolkata.
East Bengal dominated from the start with Trinidad and Tobago international Willis Plaza scoring a quick brace in the 10th and 17th minute to effectively put the game to bed.
Both goals were similar, the first from Rahul Bheke’s cross from the right, the second was sent long in by Lalrindika Ralte from the left, Plaza’s left foot working the magic for both goals.
The second half proved to be slow but Mumbai played slightly better against a side who lacked intent after scoring.
Meanwhile, newcomers Minerva Punjab and Churchill Brothers played a goalless draw at the Guru Nanak stadium in Ludhiana.
Minerva now have two points from six matches while Churchill have five from six games.
