Churchill Brothers safeguarded their position in India’s top-flight league for the next year on Saturday, as they demolished Chennai City 6-1 at the Tilak Maidan in Vasco.
Kyrgyzstani midfielder Bektur Uulu scored 4 goals giving him the highest tally of individual goals in a single match this season, with Ansumana Kromah and Brandon Fernandes also getting their names on the score sheet, Soosai Raj pulled one back for his 10-man side but it was the only consolation from the game.
After a slow start Bektur broke the deadlock in the 22nd minute after he found himself in the right place at the right time, to simply pass the ball into the net. It was 1-1 after the break after Soosairaj curled an excellently executed left-footer from just inside the box into the top left corner of the goal after receiving a short pass from Mundampara.
Churchill were back in the lead in the 67th minute after Kromah played a one-two with Brandon and slotted it past Karanjit. In the 82nd minute Brandon’s free-kick was tapped in by Bektur who made no mistake scoring his second of the game with his third to come 2 minutes later.
Brandon scored one of his own in the 90th minute, but Bektur once again put the ball into the back of the net during 3 minutes of added time to put the icing on the cake for Churchill Brothers.
After the threat and pressure of relegation, Churchill Brothers coach Derrick Pereira was delighted with the result of the match.
“We were under the threat of relegation and the pressure told on us initially. It was only after we scored the second goal in the 20th minute of the second half after we were level 1- 1, that the matters turned totally in our favour with the second booking against Chennai’s defender Anyichie Echezona which resulted in the player getting the red card making our task easier, the victory also made our place in the forthcoming Federation Cup sure,” added Derrick.
“Yes, the exit of main stopper back Anyichie enabled our team to have sway in the proceedings in the last 30 minutes in which we scored all the five goals. We were against 10-men Chennai and we took utmost advantage of the situation.”
