Chengdu Rongcheng are a football team based in Chengdu in the Sichaun Province. The club are one of the newest in the Chinese game, having only been founded in 2018. The club have enjoyed a rapid rise through the Chinese football pyramid, having been promoted in every year in their existence. They will line up this season among the Chinese Super League teams for the first time in their history.
Chengdu Rongcheng play at the Chengdu Longquanyi Football Stadium. The ground holds up to 27,000 fans.
The club have had two managers in their short history. The first manager was Spaniard José Carlos Granero. He was replaced in 2020 by current boss Seo Jung-won, who hails from South Korea.
The team have some promising Chinese players such as Feng Zhuoyi, Li Jianbin, Han Xuan, Hu Yongfa and Liu Yu. All of them will be looking to take the Chinese Super League by storm. The plethora of home stars are joined by a sprinkling of veterans from all over the world.
The club were formed in 2018 by Chengdu Better City Investment Group due to the collapse of Chengdu Qbao.
Initially, the club was filled with players from the dissolved Chengdu Qbao club and from youth teams from around the area. The club started in China’s lowest division and worked their way through to Chinese League One. Last season, the team finished fourth and got into the playoffs, where they defeated Chinese Super League team Dalian Pro 2-1 on aggregate. After a first leg that ended 1-1, it was Chengdu Rongcheng forward Ruofan Liu who scored the historic goal, capping off a monumental rise that few fans could scarcely believe had happened.
Chengdu Rongcheng face a huge challenge in trying to stay in the division this year and will be hoping to defy the odds.
