Al-Wasl is one of the top professional football clubs in Dubai. Nicknamed ‘Al Fuhud’ (‘The Cheetahs/Panthers’) and ‘Al Imbrator’ (‘The Emperors’), they belong to the larger multi-sports organization Al-Wasl Sports Club. Al-Wasl uses Zabeel Stadium as their home ground. It has a capacity of 8,439 spectators. The team is coached by Odair Hellmann.
The club’s players wear an all-yellow kit during home games and a black-colored kit for their away matches. They currently have a total of seven league titles, which is an impressive haul for any Dubai-based football club.
Al-Wasl Sports Club was started in 1960 by a group of young men who wanted to enjoy their sports hobbies and was then known as Zamalek Club. With the establishment of the UAE Pro League in 1974, two clubs, Al Shula and Al Orouba, agreed to merge with Zamalek, and the name was changed to Al-Wasl.
Al-Wasl has participated in all of the editions of the UAE Pro League since 1974. The club currently holds the record of 12 consecutive match wins and 26 straight games with no losses in a season. They also hold the record for the highest win in a league game, having beaten Ras Al Khaimah 10-1. Al-Wasl has been recognized as the team with the best attack in seven straight seasons for their performances in UAE Pro League fixtures. With seven league championships, two President’s Cups, one Gulf Club Champions Cup, and one Federation Cup, they are among the most successful football clubs in the UAE.
Al-Wasl’s hall of fame is filled with top players. Notable mentions are Fahad Khamees, who is the club’s highest-ever goal scorer with 175 goals, and Fábio Lima, another top scorer with 116 goals.
Other top players include Nasser Khamis, Zuhair Bakheet, and Farhad Majidi. The late Argentina legend Diego Maradona served as coach of the team between 2011 and 2012.
