Mumbai City have clinched their first victory of the Hero Indian Super League (ISL) 2018/19 season, with a 2-0 win over FC Pune City at the Mumbai Football Arena on Friday, a result that head coach Jorge Costa believes could be improved on.
Modou Sougou was involved in both goals, as he showed his attacking instincts to slot home a rebound in the 25th minute. A couple of minutes later, Arnold Issoko latched on to a through ball by Sehnaj Singh but his below-par shot was collected by Vishal Kaith.
Nikhil Poojary and Emiliano Alfaro had chances to equalise but their efforts were thwarted by Amrinder.
Mumbai’s second goal came minutes before the end of the first half when the referee awarded a penalty against Pune for a foul on Sougou. Bastos stepped up to slot the penalty-kick home.
With a two-goal cushion, Mumbai sat back and tried to slow down the tempo of the game.
“It was a good first half. As a team, we were much more aggressive without the ball. We did better things with the ball than in the other games. But we can and we must do better. We are still building this team with a lot of new players. It is not easy because we need points, but I am confident that we can do better,” Costa said speaking after the victory.
The 47-year-old was pleased with the clean sheet but thought his team could have done more.
“Well, in general, I think we deserved more. We had a lot of chances to score a goal but today was not our day. We made mistakes with the first and second goal and those decided the match.”
The win takes Mumbai to 6th spot in the points table with 4 points while Pune languish in the 2nd to last ninth spot, with just one point.
