Shillong Lajong ended Churchill Brothers 3-goal winning streak on Sunday, as they were held to a goalless draw in the round 14 Hero I-League game at the Tilak Maidan, Vasco.
Both teams came into the game on the back of wins, with Churchill Brothers were expecting to put up another impressive performance, but with key players failing to convert their chances into goals, this was not to be.
The hosts started well with two chances in the opening minutes. Anthony Wolf’s attempt hit the post, while although Ansumana Kromah got on the end of the rebound, his shot was saved by keeper Vishal Kaith.
Lajong were more dominant in the second half but despite creating more scoring chances, failed to take advantage.
The draw took Churchill Brothers’ points tally to 16 from 14 matches and they remain in sixth place. Lajong are fourth with 20 points from 13 matches.
During the other Sunday match Chennai City clinched a memorable 2-1 victory over Kingfisher East Bengal at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Chennai.
The visitors had the better chances throughout particularly in the final 10 minutes. Willis Plaza broke the deadlock in the 42nd minute, thumping in a Rahul Bheke cross. Nanda Kumar equalised in the 57th minute, smashing home a first time effort.
The decider was scored in the 2nd minute of injury time as Charles burst forward on the counter, held off a couple of defenders and shot straight at Rehenesh who saved the ball with his legs into the path of Prasanth Karuthadathkuni who slotted the rebound home from inside the six-yard box as Chennai City bench went into delirium.
