One of the Indian Super League’s (ISL) biggest clubs, Kerala Blasters FC, will look to kick start their pre-season playing La Liga’s Girona and A-League side Melbourne City clubs at home.
Girona FC will become only the second side from a top European league to visit India. The three sides will lock horns in a three-way tournament at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium from July 24th – 29th.
Girona FC finished 10th in La Liga after joining the top-flight last season for the very first time in their 87-year-old history, whilst Melbourne City finished third in the Australian A-League, which the best finish by the club in their history.
Varun Tripuraneni, CEO, Kerala Blasters FC said,” This will be a perfect start to our pre-season preparations as we play against two international clubs of great repute. It will be atreat for the fans in Kochi and we are expecting the crowd to come out in large numbers.”
La Liga Ambassador, Fernando Morientes, who unveiled the tournament trophy, said on behalf of the La Liga: “It gives me immense pleasure to be a part of such a historic moment. Pre-season tournaments are the best preparatory ground for a club to prepare for the season ahead.
“I remember how playing pre-season friendlies helped me identify the areas that I needed to work upon and be better prepared. I would like to wish all the very best to all participants and am looking forward to a closely-contested tournament.”
Scott Munn, Melbourne City FC CEO said, “This is Melbourne City’s first ever visit to India, and the whole squad are incredibly excited about meeting the fans in Kochi and playing in front of such a passionate crowd.
“High-quality opposition is an important part of our pre-season preparation, and we are delighted to be taking on both Kerala Blasters and our sister-club Girona FC in this brand new tournament.”
The Blasters have acquired some key players in the transfer market with a view towards building a strong team ahead of the 2018/19 season.
