Goa Return To Winning Ways With 2-1 Victory Over Jamshedpur

FC Goa returned to winning ways in Matchday 9 with a 2-1 victory over Jamshedpur at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Fatorda on Thursday 11th January.

Manuel Lanzarote scored in each half of the stormy match to help Goa register their first win in four matches.

Jamshedpur put Goa under pressure in the opening stages with Trindade Goncalves’ surging runs causing Ahmed Jahouh plenty of trouble. The visitors had an attempt at goal through Izu Azuka in the 20th minute, while at the other end Brandon Fernandes left footed shot also missed.

Andre Bikey executed a well-timed tackle on Brandon Fernandes inside the box, which the referee deemed to be a foul, leaving Lanzarote to give Goa the lead at the stroke of halftime, making no mistake from the spot.

Jamshedpur came out all guns blazing in the second half which led to Jerry Mawihmingthanga finding Trindade Goncalves unmarked in the box, the Brazilian midfielder rose highest to head in the equaliser.

On the hour mark Lanzarote scored a brace to give Goa the important win, taking their tally of 16 goals in nice matches.

On the match, FC Goa coach Sergio Lobera opined, “I think there are big games that we played better but we were not able to win. I think today has been a game where we suffered quite a bit, but for teams who know how to win need to know how to suffer. Today, as a team, we learned how to suffer against a team who are very hard to play against.”

The Spanish coach continued: “I wouldn’t complain so much about the chances we didn’t take but I would complain about the goal that we have conceded. We have to keep a clean sheet. Today as well we conceded a goal when a player crossed into the box, there were two players who were open and one puts it at the back of the net. We have to improve defensively.”
