National football coach Stephen Constantine has announced the preliminary list of players who will represent India for the match against Macau in the AFC Asian Cup Qualifiers. The list of 28 includes 11 players who represented India in the AFC U-23 Qualifiers in Doha.
The squad are due to assemble in Mumbai on September 28th where the practise schedule will commence the following day, before they head to Bengaluru a few days before the game.
The qualifier was originally scheduled for the 10th October at Sree Kanteerava Stadium, but the match was postponed until the following day with the official reason given to the continental governing body by the All India Football Federation (AIFF), the stadium was not available on this date.
It later transpired the date was rescheduled due to the Indian men’s cricket team playing their Australian counterparts in Guwahati, simultaneously. The broadcasters thought this would create loss of viewership of the football game as the cricket enjoyed a prominence.
This will be India’s fourth group fixture of the scheduled six. They currently sit at the the top of Group A having won all their previous three fixtures so far, without having conceded a single goal in the process.
During the corresponding fixture, India came away with a 2-0 victory and another win would all but guarantee their qualification from Group A, as they look to extend their unbeaten run to 11 matches.
