Bengaluru FC continued their unbeaten streak on Thursday, with a 1-0 win over Atletico de Kolkata at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium in their Indian Super League Match Day 12 game.
Australian midfielder Erik Paartalu scored the only goal of the match to seal all three points for Bengaluru which saw them hold the top spot of the ISL 2018-19 table with 27 points in just 11 games.
The defeat left ATK in sixth place with 16 points from 12 games, having maintained a decent performance with 4 wins and 4 losses this season.
Bengaluru took the lead in the 37th minute through Paartalu who once again got between two centre-backs to head home a lovely cross from Kean Lewis.
ATK were the better side throughout, even though Bengaluru had the first opportunity to score with Sunil Chhetri shooting wide a cross from Kean Lewis. The visitors almost equalised in the very first minute after play restarted when Everton Santos set Balwant clear only for Juanan to kick the ball away.
Balwant also spurned a great chance to equalise in the 67th minute when he was one-on-one with the onrushing BFC goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh, but the forward couldn’t keep his cool and his shot went inches wide of the far post.
Udanta Singh could have doubled his team’s lead in the 73rd minute after Dimas Delgado threaded a well-timed through-ball for the Indian winger who skipped past Lallawmawma, dribbled into the box but sliced his effort wide.
After the match, Bengaluru coach Carles Cuadrat said: “ATK had to win today’s match so they went all out and they had to create the chances. We also created some chances. We got chances to score the second goal. It has been a nice game for the supporters. In the end the three points matter. I don’t think they pressurised us too much.”
