Atletico de Kolkata have bagged their fourth victory with an impressive 3-2 victory of Chennaiyin FC, at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Chennai on Sunday.
There was end to end action throughout the game with both sides creating plenty of chances to score.
The win over the defending champions saw ATK rise to 5th place on the Hero Indian Super League table after 15 points from 10 games.
ATK scored first in the 14th minute through ex-Chennaiyin player Jayesh Rane, who received the ball outside the box and sent ball whizzing past Sanjiban and into the net where it nestled itself in the top corner.
The homeside drew level 10 minutes later after Mailson Alves fed Thoi Singh on the edge of the box and the midfielder slotted in a controlled shot beyond ATK goalkeeper Arindam Bhattacharya and inside the bottom corner for his fourth goal of the season.
ATK captain Manuel Lanzarote put his side ahead just before the break scoring from the spot. He scored a second in the 79th minute once again converting from a spot kick. With minutes to go for the stoppage time to kick in, Thoi setup Isaac Vanmalsawma beautifully and the midfielder made sure he made it 3-2.
ATK head coach Steve Coppell shared his thoughts on the important victory and the last ten minutes of the match, which proved to be frantic for his team. “After we scored the goal to go 3-1 up, I thought it would be great if we just quietly see out the game. Some mistakes created an atmosphere which transformed a flat period of play and we had to do some really good defending towards the end to hang in there. It is just very pleasing to get the three points,” he said.
Speaking about the side’s much-improved defence, Coppell said, “Well, we haven’t done anything transformational in training. It is just the way (the team’s) game develops.”
